Looking Good in the winter - Dr. Terry Loong, Ethos Medical
Looking Good in the winter
During the winter months, we hope to have the dewy look of innocence coming up to the new year, a contrast from the summer months with a slick of sun-kissed tan and light flighty clothes.
So how do we achieve that fresh healthy winter look while most look less than attractive in our sun-less complexion and covered in bulky woolly jumpers? Just back to basics but so important to remind ourselves; all comes down to the season of giving!
8 Steps to success
1. Give your skin a changeover. In the winter, with harsh winds and heating on full-blast, most skin types will dry out quickly. Make sure you regularly body brush or use a good body scrub to continually remove dead skin cells and allow new ones to surface, ensuring a smoother touch. Once a day scrub is good to get the circulation going and putting the glow back into your skin. Tip: You can make your own scrub by mixing coarse sea-salt soaked in good quality olive oil (3 part sea-salt and 1 part olive oil) Leave to soak for 10mins and use generously around your body, particularly around the knees, elbows, buttocks and soles of the feet that needs more attention.
2. Give your skin a drink. Use a shower gel that moisturise. Drink plenty of water and apply oil-free, easily absorbed light lotions to all part of your body. Best to apply after a scrub and hot shower to allow lotion to absorb better into the skin. Tip: For a luxurious treat, wear a pair of socks or gloves after moisturing your feet and hands while you sleep. This will leave you having the softest hands and feet when you wake up.
3. Give your body a workout. It is very tempting to stay in bed during the cold dark winter months but it’s even more important to give our body a workout to increase our energy levels and getting the blood flowing to all our organs, functioning at peak performance during the slow months. Choose an activity you enjoy – running, cycling or dancing is best … a perfect excuse to get on the dance floor during the festive season! Even retail therapy around the shops is a good brisk workout.
4. Give your body a healthy treat. It’s easy to pile on a few pounds while you’re trying to keep warm and maybe hibernating for some. Important to keep eating healthy and have plenty of antioxidants from fresh vegetables (home-cooked soups are best) and fruits to keep the simple colds away which drains most of your energy and leaving you looking less than your best. It’s also important to take a good multivitamin supplement to top any lacking nutrients.
5. Give your hair a rest. Though showering daily is considered good taste, many have found that they should wash their hair using products every other day, or even less! The reasoning behind this is simple: washing your hair strips it of its natural oils, causing it to dry out and split ends to form - a problem amplified by the winter. Leave in a moisturizing conditioner or hair mask on the last 3 to 5 inches of your hair for about 15 minutes, once a week in order to keep it soft. Also, brush hair from the scalp to the tips, to spread the natural oils. This will strengthen your hair and give it a silky feel.
6. Give your lips a reason to kiss. Use chapstick religiously. Apply every ten to twenty minutes, or as needed. Cracked lips are unattractive. Best to use chapsticks which nourishes your lips at the same time.
7. Give your face a makeover. Good time to check out the counters and get a new makeup palette – best to keep it fresh with a slight bronzer, rosy warm pink cheeks and a dab of lip gloss.
8. Give from the heart. Close to the festive season and giving from the heart… making someone happy, spending time with loved ones and being grateful, it shows on your face and it exudes a special understated beauty in all of us.
Have fun during the winter months – a time to stock up on stylish winter boots, uggs, sweatpants, jeans, sweatshirts, leg warmers, sweaters, leggings, tights, gloves and hats! Have fun adding colour to your wardrobe and to your winter season.
