Light therapy

The objective

Light therapy is a non-surgical procedure using Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) technology to treat a range of dermatological conditions including acne, vitiligo and eczema. It works by using red and blue light to stimulate the body’s own cellular mechanisms, and can be used to rejuvenate the surface of the skin. Some treatments use just red or blue light, or a combination of both.

The procedure

The procedure can usually be carried out in 20 minutes with no recovery time involved. It can also be combined with other treatments such as Botox, IPL, laser therapy, blepharoplasty, breast reduction and breast enlargement.

Once any make-up has been removed, the practitioner will fit you with eye protection. You will then lie on a therapy couch and the light will be positioned close to your head to deliver a uniform beam of light. It is usually a relaxing and pleasant experience.

The outcome

Normally, you can leave the clinic immediately after the procedure and return to work straight away.

The face should look clearer, brighter and smoother as a result of this treatment, with many patients reporting feelings of warmness and relaxation. However, full effects will depend on length of treatment and individual skin condition.

The risks

There appears to be no known side-effects or complications from light therapy, as harmful UVA, UVB or infrared radiation has been removed.

Patients who have epilepsy or porphyria should not have this treatment. Pregnant women should seek advice from their doctors before commencing this procedure.

The costs

Usually, a single treatment will cost around £60. A course of eight sessions may be required depending on skin type and condition.

The availability

Light therapy is available at private cosmetic surgery clinics and specialist skin care clinics in the UK and abroad.

The popularity

Light therapy is a relatively new procedure in the UK, however it is gaining popularity as a drug-free and non-invasive treatment for acne. Using light therapy as an anti-ageing procedure is also growing in popularity.
