Hair Transplant Fact Sheet

The objective

Hair transplant surgery restores hair on balding or thinning areas of the head by taking hair and the tissue it is contained within from areas of abundance such as the back of the head, transplanting it through a special grafting process to the regions where it is required, normally the top of the head.

The procedure

The procedure can be carried out using local anaesthetic and takes up to 4-5 hours.

The surface layers of the skin - epidermis and dermis - contain the hair follicles from which hair growth sprouts. The surgeon will take hair from regions of the head where it grows thickly. 1-6 hairs may grow from one follicular unit, and the surgeon may transplant a larger unit (micrograft) or a single-haired unit (minigraft) using very precise microscopic tools. The surgeon will make tiny holes into areas in which hair does not grow and the follicular units, which will include the surrounding skin in which the follicle grows, will be transplanted and plugged into the recipient areas. A new hairline can be built up by using rows of micrografts at the front and minigrafts a few rows further back.

The outcome

Following the procedure, the treated area will be red, sensitive and painful for a short while.

Normally, you can leave the clinic soon after the procedure. You can usually return to work and resume activities immediately.

It will take around three months for the transplanted hair units to begin their natural growth cycles, allowing the results to show gradually and appear more natural. You can then expect hair in the treated areas to be thicker and more abundant as a result of this procedure with a natural appearance and bald patches reduced.

The risks

Complications associated with hair transplant surgery include infection, scarring and a risk that some of the grafts won't ‘take’. While it is normal for the hair contained within the plugs to fall out before establishing regrowth in its new location, sometimes the skin plug dies and surgery must be repeated.

Some patients with plug grafts may notice small bumps on the scalp around the transplant sites. These areas can usually be camouflaged with surrounding hair.

When hair loss progresses after surgery, the appearance may be unnatural-looking and patchy, especially if the newly-transplanted hair lies next to patches that continue to thin out. If this happens, additional surgery may be required.

Hair loss may continue around the reconstructed areas which may look unsightly unless further surgery is embarked upon.

The costs

In the UK, expect to pay from around £2,250 (500 grafts) - £6,000 (3000 grafts). Abroad (Cyprus) expect to pay from around £2,700 (1000 grafts) - £ 5,400 (3000 grafts).

The availability

Hair transplant surgery is a very specialist procedure available at some private cosmetic surgery clinics and specialist hair care clinics within the UK and abroad.

The popularity

Hair transplant surgery is an increasingly popular option for men who are prematurely bald or who do not like the natural loss of hair through age, and feel self-conscious about have bald patches of thinning spots of hair. Women who suffer hair loss through hormonal problems or illness may also desire this type of surgery.
