Girl power surgery - Dalia Nield

It's girl power in the operating theatre

Intimate cosmetic surgery such as labiaplasty has grown in popularity in recent years as women with unsightly, deformed or elongated labia realise this isn’t something they have to live with. I find, being a female plastic surgeon, I am a popular choice to perform this sort of surgery, and also for women who are having other body procedures and prefer to deal with a woman. This led me to the idea of forming an all-female theatre operating team to cater for women having intimate procedures or who, for cultural or religious reasons, want to be treated by women only.

I have certainly found that many women will naturally feel more comfortable and at ease with other women, and for that reason the service has been hugely popular. My ‘all female’ team comprises myself, female anaesthetists, female assistant and female theatre staff. It is very unusual to have access to an all-female theatre team. Despite the fact that 90 per cent of cosmetic procedures being carried out in the UK each year are on females, only around one in ten plastic surgeons are female. It seemed like a logical extension for us to offer an environment where women can feel understood and in comfort, if that is what the patient requires.

Many people see a procedure like labiaplasty as vanity or ‘designer vaginas’, when actually the women I operate on are women with genuine problems causing pain, soreness, swelling, embarrassment and sometimes limitations in intimate relationships. There are so many women out there suffering from these sorts of deformities who do not know where to turn – or if they do, are too embarrassed to. I hope that the availability of a service like the all female team will help some women seek help for these kinds of problems.
