Fat Injections Fact Sheet

The objective

A fat injection - or fat transfer - is surgery that aims to give the body more proportion and shape, or ease lines and wrinkles in the face, by taking fat from parts where there is excess and transferring it to the parts of the body where it is desired.

The procedure

The operation is usually carried out under a general anaesthetic and takes about 1-2 hours, depending on how many areas of the body are treated. Sometimes local anaesthetic can be used if treating particular parts of the body.

The surgeon will make small incisions in the ‘donor site’ areas where fat is to be taken from and insert a metal tube to remove the fat into a syringe. The fat may then be washed before being injected into the new area using a needle. If the fat is being implanted in the face, a series of tiny needles are used to inject and fill the treated areas.

Once the procedure is complete, the incisions will be stitched.

The outcome

There may be some swelling and bruising for 1-2 weeks and you may need to wear a compression garment for bodily areas where fat has been taken from and a dressing for the face.

You may be able to leave the hospital the same day although you will need a companion to take you home if you’ve had a general anaesthetic.

You can normally return to work within 1-7 days and resume most activities within a few hours or days, depending upon how much treatment you had.

When swelling has eased, expect facial areas such as lines and wrinkles to appear smoother and softer as a result of this surgery, or for bodily areas to be more proportionate and ‘filled’ out.

The results may be improved with further injections, and may not be permanent as the fat is often eventually reabsorbed back into the body.

The risks

All general anaesthesias carry associated risks, but complications particular to fat transfer include infection, problems with wound healing, fluid build up under the skin (seroma) and bleeding under the skin (haematoma). Scarring from the incision is a small risk.

Other risks can include bruising, swelling, lumpiness, and skin discolouration. The exact amount of fat needed to smooth or alter body shape can also be difficult to judge, so the skill of the surgeon is very important to ensure results are even.

You may not be happy with the result.

The costs

Costs depend on how much fat transfer you are having. Privately in the UK expect to pay around £1,300 to £3,000. Abroad, expect to pay from around £1,195 (as a day care patient in Belgium).

The availability

Fat transfer is widely available at many private cosmetic surgery clinics in the UK as well as abroad.

The popularity

This surgery is more common amongst women who have areas of the body or face that they want ‘filled’ and is often used for correcting grooves under the eyes and sunken cheeks. Fat transfer is also used for filling the back of the hands to diminish the ageing appearance of them.
