Endermologie
What it is
Endermologie is a form of deep tissue massage, popularly thought of as the ‘granddaddy’ of cellulite treatments. It uses a low-pressure vacuum pump to gently pull the skin up into a chamber between two motorised rollers so that it can be rolled and massaged. The first cellulite treatment to be approved by the American Food and Drug Adminstration, it’s also used to help reduce scars and tighten loose skin, and as therapy for soft tissue injury.
What it does
Endermologie is effective at reducing the dimpled appearance of stubborn cellulite that won’t budge despite special diets, exercise and creams because it uniquely works on the cutaneous and subcutaneous fat levels beneath the skin surface. The Endermologie machine smoothes skin contours and tone through its intensive, continuous deep massaging effect, which increases blood and oxygen flow to the area and encourages lymphatic drainage of fluid and waste products. As well as increasing circulation, the deep manipulation also helps stimulate and stretch connective tissue, and aids the breakdown of pockets of subcutaneous fat (aka orange peel).
How you feel
During an Endermologie session, the therapist runs a hand-held massaging head over the treatment area, covered in a specially-designed body stocking. The sensation is firm and repetitive, like a manual deep tissue massage. Depending on your sensitivity, it will feel anything from slightly uncomfortable to deeply relaxing. There may be a light and temporary soreness after the session. A session usually lasts between 35 and 45 minutes.
What you should know
To get the full benefits of Endermologie you’ll need a course of 14-28 sessions. Single sessions will make the skin smoother and toned but only for a couple of days at most. It’s only really worth having as a treat before a special occasion.
A course of Endermologie is an expensive and time-demanding commitment – you’ll usually have to have 2-3 sessions a week in the beginning.
It works best on people who are no more than 30lbs overweight and for those who exercise frequently and eat a healthy diet.
After an initial course, you’ll need maintenance sessions once or twice a month to maintain the effects (and that’s only if your lifestyle is relatively healthy).
The cost
A single session of Endermologie costs between £50 and £60. Most salons offering Endermologie treatments will sell a block-booked course of 14-20 treatments with prices starting from around £650 to £700.
The availability
Primarily available in beauty salons, due to the fact that treatment courses require regular visits over a number of weeks. It’s also available in some private cosmetic surgery clinics.
