Dental tourism - Dr. Didier Fillion, London Lingual

Sightseeing In London – And A Trip To the Dentist!

Harley Street is kicking the trend, and top practitioners are seeing an increase in international patients willing to travel to the capital, often taking long haul flights, to get the very best in dental treatment.

One reads that patients are looking abroad for cosmetic dentistry, because the UK is one of the most expensive destinations in the world for dental treatment. This is very definitely not the case - and neither is it backward in innovative dentistry techniques. Harley Street boasts some of the world’s best dental practitioners who utilise new technology, such as 3D scanning, to ensure that patients get the very best treatment available.

In addition, people are far more aware of the risks of getting caught up in dental trip packages or so called ‘dental tourism’, which initially looks like a cost saving option, but can have hidden costs and safety risks related to clinics or dentists. Regulations in the UK are notoriously rigorous compared to other countries, which makes patients a huge feeling of security. The British Dental Association has expressed concern over the standards of care in certain countries, as the levels of training, qualifications and experience are often much lower than in the UK.

People today know exactly what they want when it comes to dental treatment and are not willing to take second best or risks. Many of my patients who live outside the UK have done extensive research on the Web to search out top dentists who can provide the most sophisticated techniques available. One of my patients, Romanian art director Bogdana Poptomas, did just this when she approached me for lingual braces to invisibly straighten her protruding teeth. Similarly Omolara Banjoko, a top company director, also decided it was worth travelling to London from Lagos, Nigeria every couple of months for quality orthodontic care. Her sister was already under my care care and Omolara decided it was worth hours on a plane to provide the pioneering orthodontic care I provide.

Bogdana uses her holiday entitlement to travel once every five weeks to the UK to my practice. The flight is 3 ½ hours and she usually stays with friends over a weekend, flying back after her appointment on a Monday morning. She is not unusual in the journey she is willing to make in her quest for the perfect smile.

As the world gets smaller, thanks to new technology and increased speed in travel, far more people are willing to travel long distances to receive the best possible care and an individual dental plan. And, yes, you read it here – they are, contrary to reports, touching down in London to search out the very best in dental care.
