Collagen Facial
What it is
To all intents and purposes, an anti-ageing facial. Collagen is the glue that holds the body together, particularly the skin, of which it makes up a noteworthy 75 per cent. The ingredient used in non-surgical face lifts, it naturally contains some 20 amino acids - often described as the building blocks of the body - essential for healthy skin, hair and nails. With age, the skin’s ability to produce collagen weakens - which is among the reasons why we suffer more wrinkles, dryness and sagging with each passing decade. One antidote is this specialist facial that uses collagen-based creams and serums to plump up, firm and nourish your skin back to youthfulness. Often providing instant results, it’s a favorite among spa-savvy people preparing for a big day out.
What it does
A collagen facial makes you look younger by plumping up the skin, making it more elastic and smoother. A treatment begins with a deep cleanse, toning and exfoliation to remove impurities from the skin. Next a mask soaked in freeze-dried collagen is applied to the entire face, and electrodes are used to push the collagen into the skin - without any pain. Special attention can be given to fine lines around the eyes and mouth. You may also be given Restylane injections to fill lines. Finally, you’re treated to a relaxing, skin re-energising massage.
How you feel
Relaxed and pampered; you have nothing to do but allow the collagen to take effect. Afterwards, you’re likely to notice a considerable difference in the look and feel of your skin.
What you should know
A collagen facial (like all facials) is safe for virtually everyone. If you have a skin condition or allergy, you need to tell both the receptionist when booking, and the therapist. If you don't like the idea of (albeit gentle) electric currents or you have any other worries, talk them through before deciding whether to book this facial. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, let the therapist know. Optimum results are usually achieved through regular treatments.
The cost
Prices vary, but expect to pay around £50, although in rural areas £30 would be the likely figure.
The availability
A collagen facial is available through beauty salons and spas nationwide, although it’s not nearly as common as, for example, an aromatherapy facial. Some places offer a pro-collagen marine facial.
