Buttock Implants Fact Sheet

The objective

Buttock implant surgery - or gluteal augmentation - aims to improve the appearance of a flat, unshapely behind and add volume to areas of the buttocks that are lacking. The surgery involves placing implants made of silicone in the buttock area to enhance size, shape and contour.

The procedure

The operation is normally carried out under a general anaesthetic and can take up to three hours. Sometimes, an epidural (which numbs the body from the waist down) can be used.

The surgeon will make a small vertical incision between the buttock fold or in the tailbone area and will make pockets under the buttock muscle (gluteus maximus) on either side of the buttocks. The implants are inserted into newly created pockets inside, and the muscle is closed over them in layers. Buttock implants are very soft, solid implants and unlike breast implants, which are soft, fluid-filled sacks. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions will be stitched.

The outcome

Following surgery, the buttocks region will be very painful for a few days or weeks, and movement such as walking and sitting will be very difficult.

You will need to wear special support pants for up to six weeks and some swelling can be expected. If stitches are not dissolvable, they will need removing after 10-12 days.

You will usually be able to leave the hospital after one day. You will be required to take around 1-2 weeks off work and strenuous activity must be avoided for 4-6 weeks.

You should expect buttocks that are larger, more shapely and in better proportion to the body as a result of this surgery.

The risks

All general anaesthesias carry associated risks, but complications particular to buttock augmentation include infection and slippage of the implant, which can be difficult to correct. Implant rupture is a serious but rare complication.

Problems with wound healing may occur, such as necrosis, where the blood supply is affected and the skin dies. Fluid build up under the skin (seroma) is a risk which may require further surgery to remove, as well as haematoma (blood clot under the skin).

Some patients experience reduced sensation in the treated area, which can be permanent.

More common are scar healing problems and the development of unsightly scars may depend on how your body heals.

As well, sometimes the skin at the suture site may separate due to failure to heal properly.

Other slight risks include changes in skin sensation, dimpling, lumpiness, or numbness and nerve injury. You may be left with asymmetrical buttocks.

The costs

In the UK, expect to pay around £4,000 - £5,600. Abroad, expect to pay from around £2,850 (day care patient in Belgium) to around £2,900 (USA).

The availability

Buttock augmentation is a specialist procedure available at some private cosmetic surgery clinics within the UK and abroad.

The popularity

Buttock augmentation is one of the less common surgeries but is becoming more popular with women and men who feel that their bottom needs more shape and roundness to it, since this is a difficult area to build up through exercise. The surgery can make patients feel more confident in clothes and beachwear.
