Bust Treatments

What they are

Bust treatments cover a range of therapies for improving the texture and tone of the delicate bust and décolleté area - one of the first places on the body to show the effects of ageing. These include masks, hydrating serums and gels, and massage - either manually or through electrical stimulation of the tissue around the breast area.

What they do

Bust treatments are designed to improve the appearance of the bust line. Manual bust massage is said to increase lymphatic circulation and blood flow to the area, improving the look of the skin and the firmness of the tissue tone. Essential oils are often also used to enhance the therapeutic effects and to appeal to your senses.

Bust masks - often offered in combination with a bust massage - are applied over the area to hydrate, smooth and tighten the skin.

Possibly the most effective bust treatment is ionithermie, an electrical 'massage' that helps tone the girdle of muscle around the breasts that supports them and keeps them lifted. The treatment uses conductive pads stuck to the breast to stimulate the muscles and lift and tone with a faradic or galvanic electrical micro-current. It doesn’t hurt, but a slight tingling sensation is common. This is often given in conjunction with a bust mask, with a firming cream being applied at the end. Many salons recommend a course of regular ionithermie treatments for maximum benefit.

Bust treatments are thought to be especially effective at reducing the appearance of stretch marks, and can help prevent the appearance of new ones during periods such as weight loss
or pregnancy.

There are also treatments that target the upper arms designed to improve the contours of the whole upper body.

How you feel

Bust treatments themselves are generally enjoyable and relaxing experiences that require little effort other than lying back and being pampered or massaged. Skin in the bust area will look and feel smoother and tauter thanks to product application and increased circulation. The breasts may feel slightly – albeit temporarily - fuller.

What you should know

Keep your expectations realistic and you shouldn’t be disappointed. Think of bust treatments as a treat for this delicate area. They’re particularly good during periods of physical change such as weight loss, and before, during and after pregnancy.

Though they can improve the texture and appearance of the breast, the effects are superficial and temporary – it’s impossible to tone breast tissue itself. And only surgery can lift a sagging bust.

They cannot increase bust size, although bust masks may have a temporary plumping effect due to increased hydration from the mask, gel or cream. Contra-indications to bust treatments include breast-feeding and breast cancer - seek your doctor’s advice beforehand if either of these apply to you.

The cost

Ionithermie bust treatments start from around £45. Bust masks from around £30.

The availability

Bust masks and ionithermie are widely available in salons and spas.
