Breast Augmentation Without An Implant - Vik Vijh

Breast Augmentation Without An Implant Now An Option

Breast augmentation continues to be the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure and is still growing in popularity year on year. However, for some women, even though they might like a boost in the bust department, putting an implant in their body isn’t something they’re willing to do. I addressed an international audience of peers at this year’s recent BODY - a unique medical aesthetic conference dedicated to body contouring – unveiling a new procedure to enhance breast size without the need for an implant. This new and natural alternative to breast augmentation is being hailed as a breakthrough for women who would like to achieve a fuller bust but are reluctant to have an implant in their body or subscribe to potential further surgery or the rare implant-associated complications such as capsular contracture (hardening of the breast around the implant).

The procedure is an innovative combination of treatments that are not, separately, very new. The premise of the treatment is the combination of Brava, a tissue expanding device which creates a perfect ‘scaffold’ in the breast tissues into which the patient’s own fat can injected, which is usually harvested from the thigh or abdomen. Combining these two procedures allows introduction of large volumes of fat to give a dramatic and permanent increase in breast size. The Brava® is used to prepare the breast prior to fat grafting. The device consists of two semi-rigid plastic domes that are placed around the breast and attach to the skin through a silicone gel ‘seal’. The pressure within the domes is maintained by a small battery operated pump and the entire system is contained within a fabric bra. It expands the breast tissues and provides a dramatically improved blood supply, allowing for large volume grafting in a breast that would previously only take a small volume graft. The increased blood supply means that the graft is more likely to survive.

The treatment does involve patient commitment, as the tissue expander has to be worn continually for two to four weeks prior to injections of fat, of which ideally only one will be required. The cost is likely to be comparable with implant-based breast augmentation. This isn’t a cheap boob-job or an easy route, but should appeal to those women who would never have considered putting an implant in their body, for whatever reason. Treatments such as Macrolane can offer an instant boost without the need for surgery but are non-permanent, man-made substances unlike fat produced by the patient’s own body. The possibilities of this treatment are very exciting and I hope to be able to offer it very soon – which would mean I’d be the first in the UK to do so.
