Body Scrubs

What they are

Body scrubs can do wonders for your skin and wellbeing. After a scrub, your skin should feel soft, smooth and silky, leaving you invigorated. A nice treatment to have by itself, it also fits in well with others as part of a spa ritual or package.

What they do

As we age, the rate at which the skin produces new cells slows down causing it to sag and become dull. Scrubs are a form of exfoliation, which encourage new cell growth by removing dry dead cells from the epidermis, the top layer of the skin. The abrasive particles in a scrub simultaneously massage, polish and soften the skin, while improving its circulation, evening skin tone and removing excess oil.

A body scrub or polish, (which are effectively the same things), is an effective way of preparing your skin for a subsequent treatment such a wrap, mud treatment or tan. In fact, some innovative spas offer a scrub and fake tan as a single treatment. It can also help combat cellulite.

How you feel

The business of beauty has come a long way from the times when our ancestors used sand to exfoliate (though it’s still an effective DIY method if you don’t want to splash out on a professional scrub). Today you can expect to lie back and relax in a quiet room while you’re massaged, rubbed and scrubbed all over, one area at a time, leaving your skin super-soft and revitalised.

Whilst there are variations in how they’re applied, the main difference between scrubs is usually the product used. A typical scrub uses a blend of fine sea and/or mineral salt with an essential, moisturising oil. Sugar is also often used, again mixed with aromatherapy oils or creams for extra benefits and pampering. Some body scrubs mix crushed seeds with fruit oils, oatmeal and other edible products to ‘feed’ the skin.

What you should know

Scrubs are safe for just about everyone. To help decide which type of scrub best suits your needs, talk through the options with a beauty therapist or receptionist. If you have any skin allergies or allergic to anything, tell them.

You’ll be asked to undress to your knickers, or you may be offered disposable ones.

Don’t wax or shave for at least a day before your treatment. And if you’re sunburned or have bruised or broken skin, it’s best to avoid a scrub rather than risk hurting yourself further.

The length of treatments varies but typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

The cost

In such a vast industry prices naturally vary. But expect to pay from around £15 for 30 minutes to up to £90 for 60 minutes in an award-winning spa.

The availability

Body scrubs aren’t the most widely available of spa treatments but are usually offered in day and hotel spas.
