The Bride and the Boob Job - 3 July 2008

Check out the rack!

Interestingly, we received a press release at the office this week about the marked increase in brides-to-be having cosmetic surgery prior to their big day. This can range from procedures as simple as a wee shot of Botox® in the spam a few days before, to full on breast augmentation and liposuction.

Now, I got married nigh on three years ago, and it took me more than 18 months of hard work scrubbing, sweating, rowing and good old stressing to achieve the bridal perfection I desired. That’s not to say that I was 100 per cent happy though. In my mind, I still had saddlebags (remember them?) and chunky knees. Wisely I opted for a very full skirt and very tight bodice which showed off my decent rack, thereby distracting the eye from my ‘bad’ bits, and accentuating my good. This was the perfect dress for me – it suited my personality and my style. But I did have a wee twinge at the beginning of the gown selection process, having briefly envisaged myself in a super sleek sheath of ivory silk with nary a seam or hoop skirt in sight. Given the ‘bags and the knees, this was never going to be a good look for me – but if I had considered liposuction, could it have been?

The funny thing is, at the time, I still thought I looked a bit fat, but looking at my wedding pics again over the weekend, I realised that I wasn’t AT ALL. The problem with weddings is that normally lovely maidens have a tendency to morph into Bridezilla, scattering frightened fiancés, mothers, best friends and florists in their determined wake. Not only that, you can be equally, if not more, harsh on yourself than anyone else – perhaps electing to have surgery is just part of that.

I do not have a problem with those girls who, having never been happy with an aspect of their body/face use the excuse of their wedding to change it for good. But surely, given all the primping, hairdresser, gown, make up and pure joy, then you’re going to look beautiful anyway?
