BAAPS Annual Conference - Nigel Mercer

British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) Annual Meeting 2009

The Second Congress of the European Association of Societies of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (EASAPS) and the 2009 Annual Meeting of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons was held in Cardiff from the 16th to 18th September. The primary aim of BAAPS and of EASAPS is the education of surgeons and also of the public and the Conference achieved those aims and has been acclaimed as a great success.

The Wednesday was taken up with an instructional course held jointly with the Royal College of Surgeons. Nationally and internationally acclaimed surgeons and scientists spoke to trainees on the theory and practice of liposuction and lipofilling, the theme of the main conference.

Dr Sydney Coleman of New York, the main pioneer of modern fat transfer, opened the Conference with a lecture on "The Art with the Science" of fat grafting. Following Dr. Coleman’s presentation was Dr Roger Khouri from Miami, who spoke about fat grafting of the breast. There were also ‘Expert Panels’ on volume restoration of the face and of the breast with Dr Sebastien Garcon, Dr Joachim von Finckenstein who covered ‘bodylifting’, Dr Denis Delonca presenting a new liposuction approach for ‘cankles’ and former BAAPS President Mr Norman Waterhouse giving their experience. There followed presentations by speakers from all over the world on the science behind aesthetic surgery. There were also educational presentations on important areas peripheral to aesthetic surgery, such as insurance for aesthetic operations by Beautysure, legal consequences by Magnus Boyd of Carter-Ruck Solicitors and medical grade tattooing (such as for the nipples after breast reconstruction).

The Lowry lecture

A major event of the Conference was the delivery of the Lowry Lecture, commemorating Prof. John Lowry who passed away a year ago. Prof. Lowry had championed standards in Aesthetic surgery and the Lecture was delivered by Dr Foad Nahai from Atlanta, who trained in medicine in Bristol and is one of the most famous plastic surgeons in the world today as well as former President of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS). Michelle Lowry, Professor Lowry’s daughter, with Mrs Lowry in attendance, presented the Medal to Dr Nahai. Dr Nahai spoke on risk reduction in Aesthetic Surgery internationally, which was then followed by another presentation that investigated the amount of information given by websites offering cosmetic surgery overseas. Few of the sites gave information on the procedures and almost none (less than one in ten!) provided information on the risks related to aesthetic procedures.

Another major section of the Conference was the presentation of the Best of Europe papers. These had been chosen at each EASAPS member country's National Meeting to represent them. The standard was exceptional and the links between the aesthetic societies internationally will continue to gather pace, to the betterment of our patients’ safety.
