‘Moob’ Removal Shows Biggest Rise in Latest Industry Figures, Vik Vijh explains this popular procedure

While audit figures released this month by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons procedures showed that breast augmentation is still the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, the biggest rise was in the removal of male breasts – commonly known as ‘moobs’. This almost doubled – showing a significant rise of 80%. The popularity of television programmes, such as Channel 4’s Extreme Male Beauty, on which I featured last year, means men are becoming more and more aware of the surgical options to help them regain confidence in themselves. Women are still leading the way but as the programme demonstrated, men are becoming more interested in procedures - from skincare and non-surgicals such as Botox or chemical peels, to tummy tucks and ‘moob’ removal.

But vanity aside, the serious side of Gynacomastia (man boobs) is that it can greatly affect a man’s confidence, every day life and relationships. It’s a relatively common condition affecting an estimated 40 per cent of men to varying degrees in one or both breasts. The causes vary from hormonal changes in puberty, genetic syndromes, side effects from chemotherapy for prostatic cancer and being overweight.

The good news is it’s an easy problem to correct. The best results are achieved by a combination of liposuction to remove fat and conventional surgery to remove breast tissue and sometimes also excess skin - to give a flatter, better-contoured chest. Downtime for this procedure is minimal. The procedure is done under a general anaesthetic and requires an overnight stay. A week off work is usually required and strenuous activity should be avoided for a few weeks. Some pain and discomfort will be experienced following the operation however this can be managed with painkillers. Scarring is minimal. I have performed this procedure on many men for whom the results have had a real impact on their lives and their confidence.
