Golf course looking for new tee - 21 January 2009

A former golf course in the heart of the Kent countryside has been left unplayed but fully-maintained since October 2008 waiting for a new buyer to come along and resurrect its fortunes.

Built in 1991 and 1992 on 223 arces of protected land just outside the historic town of Royal Tonbridge Wells, the course was designed by renowned Japanese architect K Saito. Subject to the necessary planning permissions could be converted into a country estate, an equestrian cross-country facility, a game shoot, an outdoor activity centre…or could remain as a golf course.

The club previously had a strong base of membership, but was closed in October 2008 after the clubhouse was sold by its owners for residential development. The course itself remains in playable condition.

Whatever your feelings about the game of golf, the course and land are in a commanding position overlooking the Weald, and is beautifully landscaped with mature woods and a couple of streams.

Emma Lawrence, of selling agents Savills, said, “This is a most unusual opportunity to acquire such a large tract of highly-desirable land and we expect a high level of interest.

The land lies in a conservation area, and is roughly square in shape. It comes with a 37,000-gallon reservoir, four buildings in the greenkeeper’s compound, and is being offered for sale from around £750,000. For that price, you could be the new owner of the Kent National Golf Course - and resident professional!
