The Ouch! Factor - 21 October 2008

To accompany the launch of their new door guard to prevent finger-trapping incidents in the home, Fingershield Safety have released the results of The Ouch! Report to raise awareness of the dangers to children from doors and door frames.

According to the latest statistic from the DTI, around 28,000 children up to 15 years old are rushed to A&E every year with injuries to fingers and thumbs from doors and door frames – and almost half of the total number of accidents involve children under five years old.

This week, Fingershield Safety have launched their new Child finger Guards for the home, which has been adapted from their similar commercial model used in 7,000 schools and nurseries across the UK. Alongside this launch, Fingershield has created the Ouch! Awareness campaign to highlight the potential accidents that can happen in the home with finger-crush injuries.

Fingershield Managing Director Paul O’Carroll said, “We have been getting an increasing number of calls from parents and carers of school children asking ‘where can we get something for the home?’. So we have adapted the commercial product for standard household doors and made it really easy to fit.”

The Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) advises parents to fit anti-finger-trapping devices to stop doors slamming shut and prevent fingers being crushed between the frame and the hinges. The Fingershield Child Finger Guard retails at £29.95 for a pack of four, and can be ordered from www.simplesafetysolutions.com
