Get out of town! - Tim Betts, Taylor Wimpey
Get out of town!
A great way to save £££s on a new home
Money-conscious movers are finding they can save a packet on a brand new home, simply by turning their backs on city living.
By getting away from cramped conditions and the hustle and bustle of busy centres, clued-up buyers can enjoy a higher quality of life in peaceful ‘out-of-town’ locations – and could save a small fortune.
This ‘escape to the country’ goes hand-in-hand with people taking the opportunity to work from home for at least part of the week, while enjoying a more laid-back and well-balanced way of living.
In most areas, demand for such homes in sought-after settings – yet benefiting from good transport links – has kept property prices healthy.
For example, the average home in Hampshire has added almost £2,000 to its value every month since May 2009, according to the Land Registry, while Basingstoke is one of the most desirable destinations for house-hunters in the county.
It’s no surprise that a town like this is so appealing for those looking to settle down. Not only does it boast an abundance of shopping, leisure and entertainment facilities, but it’s also ideal for commuters, with good access to the motorway network and central London only 45-minutes by rail.
The main difficulty for those seeking a home with all these desirable factors is the shortage of properties for sale that fit the bill. And with a limited number of such homes coming onto the market, sellers often take the opportunity to set higher asking prices.
New homes developers, however, are addressing this problem by providing high-quality houses and apartments on the peaceful fringes of towns such as Basingstoke, where residents can enjoy the best of both worlds – good transport links and amenities close by, plus beautiful countryside right on the doorstep.
Whereas a four-bedroom home close to Basingstoke town centre costs an average £340,000 according to the independent website www.home.co.uk, a new four-bedroom home at Taylor Wimpey’s Everest Park development on the attractive northern edge of the town can be purchased from £245,000 – a saving of nearly £100,000 simply by ‘getting out of town’.
First-time buyers too can benefit from this sort of cost-saving. Studio apartments can be purchased for under £84,000 using the Easy Start shared equity initiative at the Marnel Park development in Basingstoke.
The fact is in the figures – by moving out of town, clever buyers are securing a lot more home for their money.
Leaving London? Here’s how to save thousands of pounds on a new home (in just a few minutes!)
We all tend to accept house prices are higher in London, but did you know that just a few minutes up the road, you could save so much?
For example, at the Kingshill Grange new homes development in High Wycombe, Bucks, the average four-bedroom family home is just £496,000 – £100,000 less than in Ickenham only 15 miles east along the M40, and £300,000 less than similar sized properties in Gerrard’s Cross.
While towns like High Wycombe enjoy excellent road links to London, they usually also offer superb rail services – High Wycombe station to London Marylebone takes less than 40 minutes.
This sort of move is a great way to enjoy life at a more relaxed pace, save money on the mortgage or release funds for retirement.
