Stay-at-home Brits prompt airline and developer to team up

Bernadette Costello asks if rising tourism will boost Cornwall’s holiday home sales

“Staycation” Brits who holidayed in the UK in 2009 have prompted Air Southwest and The Cornwall Hotel & Spa to team up to offer cheap flights for holiday homebuyers.

Investors in new woodland homes at The Cornwall in Tregorrick, close to the Eden Project, will be given £50 towards their inspection trip flights in October and November. And with prices from £58 return on Air Southwest, buyers would pay as little as £8 return to Newquay from all UK airports [including bags, check-in and taxes].

The Cornwall, a country estate that belonged to Olympic rowing sensation Ed Coode’s family for 200 years, sits on 43 acres and dates back to Anglo-Saxon days. It is now being fully restored by CMR Leisure and Sir Robert McAlpine into 60 two and three-bed freehold properties surrounded by mature woods and Victorian parklands. A pool and spa, run by Aromatherapy Associates and The Refinery, will feature within a walled garden on the estate.

Resorts in the Southwest saw up to an 18% rise in tourism this summer and The Cornwall’s “Stay & Let” scheme is designed for buyers looking to cash-in on rentals throughout the year. The nearby tourist port of Falmouth has also been given the go-ahead for dredging, which will moor over-size cruise-liners to help boost annual tourist numbers from 40,000 to 100,000 by 2011.

Sales director at The Cornwall Hotel & Spa, Sam Weller, says: “A member of The Cornwall team will meet prospective buyers at Newquay airport on arrival. After their tour of the estate and woodland homes, visitors will see the historic harbour of Charlestown, the stunning beach at Porthpean and the nearby fishing port of Mevagissey before being taken back to the airport for their evening flight home.”

Mike Coombes, deputy chief executive of Air Southwest, says when the first phase is completed on Valentine’s Day 2010, The Cornwall will be among the best resorts in the county. “The Cornwall will give more reason for people to holiday in the UK in terms of its high quality of accommodation,” he adds.

‘Stay & Lets’ near The Eden Project

Under The Cornwall’s “Buy & Stay” scheme, investors can negotiate how much they use their woodland home every year – rentals can be managed by the owner or hotel operator.

A concierge service for all guests staying at the woodland homes will be run by Bespoke Hotels and will include restaurant-prepared meals waiting for them after their golf, sailing and day trips. One of three restaurants will be in the style of an “English Carluccio’s”.

Nearby attractions include The Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, beaches at Mevagissey, Padstow and the ancient town of Fowey – the former home of author Daphne DuMaurier. There are also 45 golf courses within a 50-minute drive.

The Cornwall Hotel and Spa is 16 miles from Newquay and the closest town is St Austell, which is nearing completion of a £70 million redevelopment, including a new cinema.

Woodland homes at The Cornwall (www.thecornwall.com) start at £318,500 and come with luxury furniture packages, property management and 3 per cent guaranteed rental income.
