Teeth implants are titanium screws used to replace missing teeth, according to James Goolnik, a cosmetic dentist from the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry who joins Maggie Philbin to discuss this interesting procedure.

James relays how teeth implants are a more natural form of correction, as in the old days, in the case of a missing tooth, dentists used to cut down healthy teeth either side to fit a bridge. People who have dentures often choose implants so that they can eat otherwise unavailable foods.

James describes the procedure itself, usually performed under local anaesthetic, and reveals that you can place an implant anywhere in the mouth providing there is enough bone material to work with.

He goes on to discuss costs (£1500 per tooth) and compares the cost-effectiveness of this with bridges, plus the risks of implants, including the possibility of nerve damage if it is mis-placed, and how to track down a good dentist.

James also tells Maggie that the success rate of implants is lower for smokers due to the quality of the teeth bone.
