In this informative podcast, presenter Maggie Philbin uncovers the truth about Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a condition which centres round a distorted self-image. She is joined in the studio by Professor Alex Gardner, a chartered psychologist and psychotherapist.

Alex describes how those who are affected by BDD display a preoccupation with their appearance which can cause extreme distress and interrupts normal life. Symptoms can include constant appearance-checking in mirrors and shop windows or, conversely, avoiding mirrors altogether.

Alex provides an overview of the causes, who this disorder affects, young men and women, and the sorts of help available for anyone suffering from it, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

He points out that cosmetic surgery may not provide the solution; in fact, it can still leave those with BDD dissatisfied.
