Prominent or over-large ears can cause self-consciousness for many; just under 1000 otoplasty procedures were carried out in 2006 according to figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). Surgeon David Gault, from BAAPS, joins Maggie Philbin in the studio to get to the crux of this interesting procedure.

David describes the various techniques involved in remodelling the ear. Nowadays, ears can be corrected at the time of birth with flexible splints, which takes away the need for later surgery. The length of the operation, the recovery times, risks and costs are all discussed.
